
Altaf Mukhi
Altaf Mukhi is an experienced educator and academic advisor with over 25 years of service in both professional and voluntary capacities across the Ismaili Muslim community. He holds a Master’s degree in Muslim Cultures from the Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilizations (ISMC), Aga Khan University (London), and an earlier Master’s degree in Marketing.

His research at ISMC examined community engagement and the socio-economic impact of heritage conservation along the Swahili coast in Tanzania. He is also a certified teacher educator through the Institute of Ismaili Studies (IIS) and Aga Khan University.
Altaf was one of five individuals globally selected for the prestigious Postgraduate Research Fellowship at the IIS—a two-year program aimed at strengthening the academic capacity of ITREBs—which he completed with merit in 2024. His research at the IIS focused on gender and power in Islamic funeral traditions, specifically the lived experiences of Ismaili women in Uganda.
Professionally, Altaf has held senior leadership roles with the National Council and ITREB in Africa, and he currently serves as Senior Advisor, Academic Affairs for ITREBs in East Africa. A seasoned speaker and trainer, he has delivered over 1,400 wāʿzs and facilitated more than 2,500 learning sessions across Europe, Asia, and Africa in multiple languages.
